What equipment and software is recommended to start day trading at home?

Well there are a HUGE number of choices of which software to use to start your trading.

The answer depends a lot on if you are just starting out as a beginner or if you have been trading for a while and are ready to step up your game.

If you are just starting out and a beginning trader, I would say one of your best bets is to just use the trading software platform that some of the major brokers include with your brokerage account.

Me personally I have been using Etrade for a while and their Etrade Power Etrade Pro platform is actually very comprehensive and very nice. You can get it free every 3 months as long as you make at least 30 trades per quarter.

If you do not make 30 trades per quarter you can pay I think about $40 per month to use their trading platform. It is really good in my opinion so probably worth the monthly cost.

I have not used Ameritrade or Schwab so I cannot speak for how good their platforms are.

I have used Fidelity and they have a good platform but it does not even come close to Etrade in my opinion.

Other options are to use http://www.interactivebrokers.com . I have not used them either but I hear good things about them.
