Trade only with "extra" money, i.e, money that is not earmarked to pay bank loans, car installments, housing loans, telephone and electricity bills, etc. One of the major reasons for investing only with extra funds is that your trading judgment will remain objective.

Very concise and simple advice but I do agree with you how important this is.

Especially since I have violated this rule almost to the point of making it common practice.

I do have a lot to learn, but your point is well taken.

I find that the trades I make with 'hot money' screw up my emotions and make it more difficult to keep consistent decisions with my trades. Those small print disclaimers you see on trading and investment site should be in large font.

Anyway, in some circumstances I think people do not have that much risk capital to work with and therefore their 'trading money' part of what very little they have. I still think people can have success this way. But the best approach may be to take a gradual approach to money management as the account grows larger.
